I’ve been closely following the legal case of a man who owns a ranch in a small Texas town. As reported here,
Hearing his 5-year-old daughter crying from behind a barn, a father ran and discovered the unthinkable: A man molesting her. The father pulled the man off his daughter, authorities say, and started pummeling him to death with his fists. …
In declining to indict the 23-year-old father in the June 9 killing of Jesus Mora Flores, a Lavaca County grand jury reached the same conclusion as investigators and many of the father’s neighbors: He was authorized to use deadly force to protect his daughter.
Lest there be any doubt about what happened,
Emergency crews responding to the father’s 911 call found Flores’ pants and underwear pulled down on his lifeless body. The girl was examined at a hospital, and authorities say forensic evidence and witness accounts corroborated the father’s story that his daughter was being sexually molested.
It’s going to take a long time for this little girl to recover from such a trauma, if she ever really does. But one thing she’ll always know, and I’m sure will treasure, is the fact that her father is a real man who defended her when he had to.
I wonder how this would have been handled in other states? (Actually, I don’t, but that’s rhetorical.) How about in California or New York? All the usual suspects would undoubtedly be demonstrating, led by the usual rabble rousers. The father would be under arrest, no doubt, and he would be tried, probably to the point of bankruptcy even if he were eventually vindicated. He might even be charged with a hate crime — who knows.
There are many good reasons to choose to live in a state like Texas, with lower taxes, lower unemployment (6.9%), less of a union choke-hold on the government’s purse, a much better business environment, and a well-developed sense of justice and fairness. This case is clearly a good example.
As they say, “Don’t mess with Texas” … or Texans and their families.
