I am a graduate student in the aerospace engineering program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I also work part-time for the Army Corps of Engineers as a programmer and data analyst.
Growing up, my family life was fairly tumultuous and we moved around a lot, but it was always within the Chicago area so that’s usually where I tell people I’m from. From kindergarten to high school I switched schools six times, and I have actually gone to the University of Illinois for longer than I have attended any other school, ever. I managed to get a fairly good education despite it all though, so I guess everything worked out.
In my spare time I enjoy crafting, cooking, studying martial arts, and reading. Above all this last. My apartment has no television, but it does have two bookcases and a closet full of books, and they have all been read, many of them multiple times. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy, but lately have been focusing more on politics, philosophy, economics and history.
As an engineer, I know that reality cannot be evaded or faked. Launch vehicles do not care about your feelings, and satellites do not care about your good intentions. They do care about your competence, intelligence, perceptivity, and professional integrity (i.e. adherence to reality). The standards are high, and can be very demanding. But if you’ve ever seen any of the space program imagery, then you know that the results can also be pretty breathtaking. I decided to become a rocket scientist when I was 15, and I haven’t looked back since. With any luck, I’ll never have to.
